3 Things to Know if You Are Considering Mail-Order Abortion
The internet has made many things more accessible, and for women navigating an unplanned pregnancy, ordering the abortion pill online can seem like a discreet and simple path forward. But ease of access is not the same as safety. When these drugs arrive without a health evaluation, confirmed pregnancy details, or provider involvement, the risks that come with them can go unrecognized until a woman is already in a serious situation.
At CareNet Pregnancy Center of Paradise, we genuinely care about you and your health. Our medical staff offers free, confidential pregnancy testing and limited obstetrical ultrasounds performed by a nurse, along with a supportive conversation with an advocate and honest information so you can make a decision you feel confident about.

1. What’s Actually Inside That Package?
Mail-order abortion involves two drugs. The first, mifepristone, works by blocking progesterone, the hormone that sustains a pregnancy. The second, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through vaginal bleeding and is taken 24 to 48 hours later. The FDA approves this regimen only through 10 weeks gestation and cautions against purchasing these drugs online.
When abortion drugs come through an unverified online source, there is no reliable way to confirm that what arrives is what was ordered. Many online pharmacies operate outside the United States and are not held to FDA manufacturing standards. Pills may contain the wrong dosage, ineffective ingredients, or contaminants. Taking drugs without knowing their actual contents is a real and overlooked risk of this route.
2. What an Ultrasound Reveals That Online Orders Skip
One of the most significant gaps with mail-order abortion is that it skips the ultrasound step entirely. An ultrasound is not just a formality. It provides information that directly affects whether the abortion pill is safe and appropriate for a specific pregnancy.
Gestational age tells you how far along the pregnancy is. The abortion pill’s effectiveness decreases and risks increase beyond the approved timeframe. A home pregnancy test cannot provide this information, and online providers rarely require confirmation of gestational age before sending drugs.
Pregnancy location is another critical detail. When a pregnancy develops in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. This is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention and cannot be treated with the abortion pill. Without an ultrasound confirming the pregnancy is inside the uterus, taking these drugs could allow a dangerous situation to go unaddressed.
Pregnancy viability matters too. Miscarriage occurs in roughly 10 to 20% of known pregnancies, and the signs are not always obvious. An ultrasound can show whether the pregnancy is actively developing before any decision is made. If the pregnancy has already ended naturally, taking abortion drugs could still cause physical side effects without affecting the outcome.
3. The Body’s Response Is More Than Just Discomfort
Even when taken in the right circumstances, the abortion pill comes with physical effects that many women describe as more intense than they expected. Cramping and bleeding are part of the process, but other side effects can include:
- Fever or chills
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Headache and dizziness
- Prolonged or heavy bleeding
Beyond side effects, there are also documented medical risks. These include incomplete abortion, where some pregnancy tissue remains, and a follow-up surgical procedure is needed, as well as infection and, in rare cases, serious complications requiring emergency care.
When drugs are taken at home without a provider monitoring the process, it can be difficult to know the difference between what is expected and what signals something has gone wrong. Having a healthcare professional available to guide that process makes a meaningful difference.
