I’m pregnant and still in school. Now what?
Knowing you have protected rights is important if you’re pregnant and still in school. Under Title IX, a federal civil rights law, you are protected from discrimination and entitled to pregnancy-related accommodations, including:
- Excused absences due to pregnancy or childbirth; plus, when you return, you’re entitled to receive the same academic standing as when you left (this means that your grade must stay the same and not lower due to your absence)
- Reasonable adjustments, including larger desks, elevator access, frequent bathroom trips, etc.
- Access to extracurricular activities and courses
Once you find out you’re pregnant, you must speak with your school counselor as soon as possible to ensure you have access to everything you need to succeed academically.
