How Pregnancy Tests Work
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which your body starts producing after a fertilized egg successfully implants in the uterus. Testing too soon, before implantation, can lead to inaccurate results.
Most over-the-counter tests can detect hCG around the time of a missed period. The Mayo Clinic recommends waiting until at least a day or two after your missed period for the best chance at an accurate result. Take the test first thing in the morning, when hCG levels are most concentrated in your urine.
Negative Test, But Feeling Unsure?
A negative result doesn’t always mean you’re not pregnant. If you test early, your body may not have produced enough hCG to be detected. If your period doesn’t begin within a few days, it’s a good idea to test again.
If your cycle is irregular, consider waiting about three weeks after unprotected sex before testing. If you’re still unsure about your results, we offer free pregnancy testing at our center to give you the clarity you need.
What to Expect After a Positive Test
Seeing a positive test result can prompt many emotions. Getting more information is the next important step to feeling reassured of what’s next. If your test is positive, our staff will offer a limited obstetrical ultrasound at no cost. This can help confirm that the pregnancy is developing as expected, determine how far along you are, and identify the pregnancy’s location.
Our trained staff is ready to listen and answer your questions. Schedule your free pregnancy testing appointment today.
