A woman reflecting on her delayed period

My Period is Late. What Do I Do?

A late period can bring a lot of feelings to the surface. From fear to anxiety to even some excitement, these emotions can leave you questioning what to do next.

First, take a deep breath and remind yourself there is a way forward. Your first step is to take a pregnancy test to get an initial result. And no matter your result, you have people in your corner.

Keep reading to learn more about taking a pregnancy test and where to go from here.

Your First Step

Taking a pregnancy test can help you find some clarity during this time. If your cycle is regular and your period is late, this could indicate you’re pregnant. However, a missed period can be due to other health conditions, hormonal imbalances, and weight changes.

You might also have other common pregnancy symptoms, including:

  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Food aversions
  • Nasal congestion
  • Moodiness

Symptoms alone cannot determine whether you’re pregnant. Taking a pregnancy test at least several days after a missed period (or a few weeks after sexual intercourse) can provide further insight.

My Test is Positive. What’s Next?

If you receive a positive result, know that more information is needed to confirm your pregnancy. You may be feeling overwhelmed or uncertain right now, and that’s okay. We’re here to help.

Care Net Pregnancy Center of Paradise provides free pregnancy testing and limited obstetrical ultrasound scans to provide essential information.

An ultrasound is crucial for determining whether your pregnancy is located in the uterus, if it is progressing, and how far along you are. The scan can also determine if you’ve miscarried or have an ectopic pregnancy. The latter requires immediate medical treatment to prevent life-threatening complications.

After confirming your pregnancy, we can discuss your options: abortion, adoption, and parenting. Know that you can make a confident decision without pressure. We’re here to provide information in a confidential, non-judgmental environment.
