What If I Change My Mind After Taking the First Abortion Pill?
If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and are now wishing you hadn’t, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed. You may be wondering whether anything can be done or if it’s already too late.
There may still be an opportunity to continue your pregnancy, but time matters. If you’ve taken mifepristone, contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network immediately at 1-877-558-0333. Their confidential helpline is available 24 hours a day to connect you with a medical provider who can discuss abortion pill reversal.
After reaching out, you can also schedule a free appointment at CareNet Pregnancy Center of Paradise if you’d like additional support.
Why Acting Quickly Is Important
A medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill) involves two different drugs.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to support pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, is usually taken 24 to 48 hours later and causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy.
If you’ve only taken mifepristone, abortion pill reversal may still be an option. Beginning treatment as soon as possible offers the greatest chance of success.
How Abortion Pill Reversal Works
Abortion pill reversal uses supplemental progesterone in an effort to counteract the effects of mifepristone before misoprostol is taken.
Progesterone has been prescribed during pregnancy for decades for a variety of medical reasons. While abortion pill reversal cannot guarantee that every pregnancy will continue, one study reported ongoing pregnancies in approximately 64% to 68% of cases when treatment was started promptly.
A medical provider can explain whether you may be a candidate based on your individual situation.
You Don’t Have to Face This Alone
Changing your mind after taking the first abortion pill isn’t uncommon, and seeking help quickly is important.
The Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 Hotline is available around the clock at 1-877-558-0333. You’ll be connected to a provider, access confidential resources, and more.
